The 5th Chronical in a never-ending series not on Netflix.
It was1976, year of the Fire Dragon. It was the hour of the SnakeLooking up personnel offices from under a wet black umbrella with a bent steel shaft and a broken canopy, & a wet raincoat but the rain was never ending and so I took shelter in one of the corporate bldg. lobbies on 57th street for a brief respite, As I rested against the marble columns .& waited for more ideas and inspirations on how to garner a job with any decent prospect so with the rest of wet humanity I ventured into a cafeteria which was full of low to middle back office workers it was called Horn & Hardat 143 Nassau Street NY. Here people could afford a coffee and sandwich. After making sure my sheep skin was dry, I gathered enough steam to dart to my next bldg. to scout for personnel depts, just then my eyes meet someone who seemed very familiar, it was an elderly messenger who I had met before and he said, “Hey Kid! how you doing”. So, I explained my situation I was having difficulty finding work. He was full of enthusiasm and told me to go back where I first started, and he was sure they could find me work.
So, I looked up my old boss, and was confronted with his first line of defense, so I was surprised remembered me to my surprise and loudly alerted her boss that someone was looking for him. “What does he want” she said” he is looking for work” unknown to me at that time the back office was greatly burden with paperwork and needed many clerks at that time. “Send him in “so in I went, & explained that I use to work for him & went to college etc.
Beaming with a smile He literally with a loud booming voice said, “Who the hell told you to go to college” “Look at me I never went to college” and laughed his head off, everybody around was all smiles and giggly. I was sweating at this interaction like I was in confession box at Saint Patrick’s. church
“Let me tell you something you will be working overtime staring today” He called personnel dept got my application on a fast track & before you know my luck had changed, and I was gainfully employed had no idea I had full medical insurance, let alone how much I was going to make in a week, I never asked & he never mentioned and I worked tirelessly for the next eight years, with a good salary, till the firm went out business. Unbeknownst to me I had just met the man who was to be feared, and later it was revealed to me by my coworkers, that this man’s other name was the Hatchet man, he had the power to fire all underperforming managers & junior or senior VPs. Cursing loving was a second language, without a sting in fun to all and everyone had nick name. He loved hard working line clerks; overtime was never an issue, free lunches and dinners were routine. His title is still a mystery today, he had no family or sports memorabilia on his desk, was not a partner and his name never appeared in annual reports. He had the backing of the entire board member & the CEO. Yet he remained a king in his own unknown a kingdom with no name, with absolute power and the fate of many in his hands.
